Bauhaus: art and industry – a new entity

The Bauhaus was a German school of art and architecture founded in 1919 by architect Walter Gropius and active until 1933, when it was closed down by the Nazis. The new school straddled the line between art and craft and has had a strong influence on modernist architecture, industrial design and graphic design. Among the many artists who taught at the school we find among others Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten and Paul Klee.
