Hokusai; the great star of Japanese painting

Katsushika Hokusai was born more than 250 years ago in Edo period Japan. Today he is regarded as one of Japan's greatest artists and his influence cannot be underestimated. Hokusai has gone down in history as the artist who innovated Japanese art, and helped to spread it beyond the borders of Japan;

Hokusai was classically trained in traditional Japanese arts and crafts, working mainly with woodcuts, screen printing and painting. Although he took influences from many sources, he remained faithful to the classical motifs:Fuji, everyday life, myths and nature images.

His most famous images come from Fugaku Sanjurokkei, a collection of 36 images of the sacred Mount Fuji from different distances and perspectives. It is in this collection that we find the Underworld outside Kanagawa, one of the most reproduced images in world history;

Hokusai's free approach to shapes and perspectives made a great impression on European painters in the late 19th century. Artists likevan GoghGauguin,Toulouse Lautrec andMonet were great admirers and Japanese techniques found their way into much of their art. This is particularly evident in van Gogh's later works (for example, Almond Blossom).
